A woman who drove a vehicle through a fence and into a nursery playground in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, injuring three young children, has received a suspended prison sentence after admitting dangerous driving.
According to the article, Jayne James, 63, drove a grey Omoda people carrier into the car park of Partou Sunny Days Day Nursery & Pre-school during drop-off on 16 June. The vehicle moved forward at pace, went through a wooden fence separating the car park from the playground and continued into an area occupied by 22 children aged between two and three. It then struck a brick wall, trapping a two-year-old boy between the vehicle’s front wheel and the wall. A nursery staff member freed the child and contacted emergency services. Two other children were injured by flying debris. All three children were taken to hospital and sustained minor injuries, with the trapped child suffering a substantial friction burn to the torso.
James was arrested at the scene and later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving. The article reports that an examination found no mechanical fault that could have caused or contributed to the collision. She was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, and was disqualified from driving for two years.
