A mother in Rolleston near Christchurch, New Zealand, says she felt vulnerable, unsafe, and sick after discovering racist and anti-Semitic graffiti sprayed across children’s playground equipment at Ackland Park on Lemonwood Drive. The vandalism included swastikas, Nazi symbols, and racial slurs in a public playground regularly used by local families and young children.
Brazilian national Amanda Cursino, who has lived in the Selwyn district for about six months, said the park had previously felt peaceful, family-friendly, and well maintained compared with playgrounds she had experienced in Brazil. That sense of safety changed after she arrived at the playground with her young son and found offensive messages covering the play structures.
The incident has renewed concerns around vandalism, hate-based graffiti, and community safety in recreational spaces designed for children. It also follows previous racist and Nazi-related graffiti incidents reported in the wider Rolleston area in recent years. Local authorities were expected to remove the graffiti, while concerns remained about the impact of extremist symbols appearing in public playground environments used daily by families and children.
