Public playground ‘can’t be used when it rains’

Concerns have been raised about the condition of a public playground in Ireland after it was reported that the facility becomes unusable shortly after rainfall. A councillor told a Naas Municipal District meeting that the playground at Monread Park cannot be used if it rains for about 20 minutes, as conditions quickly make the area unsuitable for play.

The issue has led to residents travelling to other parks, with some families reportedly driving elsewhere to access usable playground facilities. Local representatives said upgrades are needed to address the problem, noting that thousands of people live in the surrounding area and rely on the park as a nearby recreational space.

Council officials stated that some improvement works have already been completed, including drainage work carried out the previous year. A full upgrade of the playground has also been proposed as part of a wider masterplan for Monread Park, although work on the project is expected to begin after other priority recreational developments in the area are completed.
