A long-standing playground at Triton Park in Mullaloo has been removed by the City of Joondalup after reaching the end of its useful life, leaving only a cleared area where swings and slides once stood. The decision not to replace the equipment has sparked frustration among residents, who say the playground was a valued community space used by generations of families.
A petition signed by 99 residents calling for an upgrade was previously rejected by council. Locals described the site as an important meeting place that supported social gatherings and everyday play, particularly for young children and families. Some residents also highlighted the role of the equipment in supporting developmental and sensory needs, including children with additional needs who relied on features such as swings.
The City of Joondalup stated the decision aligns with planning guidelines aimed at providing equitable access to play spaces, noting nearby parks within a 400-metre catchment already offer established play infrastructure. The council also pointed to recent and upcoming investment in other play spaces across the area.
No funding has been allocated to replace the removed playground. Instead, $15,000 has been set aside in the 2025-26 budget to construct a bike skills track at the site. The outcome has raised concerns among residents about the loss of local play opportunities and the broader impact on community connection and accessibility to informal play spaces.
