Parkour Classes for Seniors Use Playgrounds to Help Prevent Deadly Falls

Community programs in the USA are using playgrounds, balance drills, and modified parkour exercises to help older adults improve strength, flexibility, coordination, and fall resilience. The initiative comes as Wisconsin recorded the highest reported death rate from falls among older adults in the United States, with more than 1,800 deaths in 2024.

Classes involve adults aged 50 and older using playground spaces and equipment for supervised exercises focused on balance, controlled movement, and safe falling techniques. Participants practised activities including balancing on narrow planks, ground recovery movements, stretching, and coordination drills designed to reduce injury risks from falls.

The report highlighted different fall prevention programs for seniors as falls remain the leading cause of injury-related emergency calls and deaths. Funding for these programs continue to face challenges, however participants described physical strength, mobility, social connection and improved confidence through the classes. “I’m no longer afraid to fall because I know I’m going to do it, and I know how,” one of the 70-year-old participants commented.
