A London mother is urging parents to recognise early infection warning signs after her 10-year-old son came home with a minor grazed elbow on the school playground. The school nurse cleaned and dressed it and the mother changed the plaster herself that night. “All rather normal and boring,” she described.
Two days later, the boy complained of arm pain and tenderness under his armpit but otherwise appeared well and had no fever. His mother became concerned after noticing a red line extending from the wound on his elbow towards his armpit, prompting an immediate visit to hospital.
Doctors at Barnet A&E reportedly treated the child with intravenous antibiotics after identifying ascending lymphangitis, an infection affecting the lymphatic system that can potentially progress to sepsis if left untreated. The child later returned home with oral antibiotics after the red line subsided.
Medical experts reported that infection awareness like early recognition and urgent treatment are important in preventing serious complications even for seemingly minor playground injuries where cuts or abrasions are exposed to outdoor surfaces and environments.
