“I Can’t Go on the Big Swings”: Playground Moment Highlights Gender Gap in Sport

A moment at a playground prompted reflection on how early gender stereotypes about sport and play can develop in young children. Angela Priestley described walking with her three-year-old daughter to a playground when the child said she could not use the “big swings” because she was a girl. The comment surprised Priestley, who had previously tried to ensure her daughter grew up seeing women participate in sport and believing that sport and recreation were open to everyone.

The playground visit occurred near Ikon Park in Melbourne, the site of the first AFLW game, and the family had been actively engaged with women’s sport. Despite this exposure, Priestley suggested that only a short time in a new daycare environment had been enough for her daughter to absorb gendered messages about what activities were appropriate for girls and boys.

The experience led to broader reflection on participation in sport and the persistence of gender stereotypes that may limit girls’ confidence or willingness to engage in physical activity. Early childhood experiences in play environments, including playgrounds, can influence how children perceive their abilities and opportunities. This highlights the importance of representation, access to opportunities, and supportive environments that encourage girls to participate fully in sport and physical play. Challenging stereotypes and providing visible role models in sport and recreation are presented as key factors in helping girls feel confident using facilities and pursuing athletic interests from an early age.
