Families in British Columbia have raised concerns for the major construction activity beginning immediately beside their local Playground. The site is being developed into a new childcare and community centre, with excavation works, backhoes, and heavy machinery operating close to active play areas.
The playground has remained open during construction despite nearby noise, vibration, dust, and the closure of the adjacent parking lot. Observations from the site described children playing while large machinery operated nearby, prompting concerns around comfort, environmental exposure, hearing impacts, and potential physical hazards from construction materials.
The report discussed how prolonged exposure to high-decibel construction noise may affect hearing and wellbeing, particularly for children. It also noted concerns around dust inhalation, vibration, and the overall suitability of maintaining playground access during intensive construction works.
The City of Langford was asked whether construction hours or playground access arrangements would be adjusted during the project. The new childcare and community centre is expected to open in 2027.
