Fitness Group Accused of ‘Taking Over’ Adelaide Playground Sparks Controversy

A men’s fitness group using a suburban playground in Adelaide has been accused of “taking over” the space, prompting concerns about safety, access, and appropriate use of play facilities. The group has been conducting regular training sessions at the Glenside playground, using play equipment for calisthenics and strength exercises.

Complaints from parents raised concerns that large numbers of shirtless men using the equipment made the space feel intimidating and discouraged children from accessing the playground. Some reported the group’s presence effectively limited use of the area during peak times.

The group’s founder defended the sessions, stating they are aimed at supporting young men through fitness and that the equipment is rated for such use. However, Burnside Council confirmed it is investigating the complaint and noted no permit had been issued for exclusive use of the playground.

Council representatives emphasised that public playgrounds are intended to remain accessible to all users and are not designed for exclusive or structured group activities. Alternative fitness-specific facilities were identified as more appropriate for organised training.
