Bathrooms at Lauridsen Skatepark in Des Moines, Iowa, were closed indefinitely after extensive vandalism caused more than US$10,000 in damage. The incident left toilets smashed, stall walls damaged and facilities unusable, prompting immediate closure while repairs are planned. The vandalism occurred on 18 May 2026 and is considered significantly more severe than previous incidents experienced at the skatepark.
The Skatepark, recognised as the largest open skatepark in the United States, has experienced vandalism issues since opening in 2021, including previous damage to bathroom facilities. Authorities said surveillance footage was being reviewed as part of the investigation, while temporary portable toilets were installed for visitors during the closure.
Polk County Conservation officials said the damage was extensive and repairs would require replacement materials and upgraded components designed to better withstand future vandalism. The closure has affected visitors during a busy period for the popular recreation facility, which attracts skaters of all skill levels. A suspect was later arrested and charged in connection with the incident.
