‘Dangerously Fast’ 30-Foot Playground Slide Divides Community as Safety Concerns Grow

A newly installed 30-foot tubular metal slide at High Park in Derby, Kansas, has sparked debate after parents raised concerns about the speed at which children exit the slide. The slide forms part of a new Hedra Tower play structure installed during a $4 million park redevelopment that also included a splash pad, pickleball courts and other recreational upgrades.

While some parents have reported children being injured and called for additional safety measures, including improvements to the landing area, others have launched a petition urging the city not to alter the popular attraction, arguing its thrill is part of its appeal.

City officials said some users have been pouring water from the splash pad down the slide, with other reports also emerging that soap has been used to make it even faster. Visitors have been asked not to add water or other substances to the slide while the city works with the playground installer to investigate options to reduce ride speed or modify the landing area.

Despite the concerns, the city has no plans to close the slide and continues to monitor its performance while encouraging parents to determine whether the equipment is suitable for their child.
