Multiple playgrounds across the Hawkesbury region in NSW have been closed or partially dismantled, with council citing safety concerns and budget limitations as the primary drivers. Inspections found several play structures had reached the end of their usable life and posed risks due to age and deterioration, leading to immediate closures at some sites.
While some playgrounds, including those at North Richmond and Kurrajong, are expected to be replaced in the future, others face permanent removal with no current plans for redevelopment. Additional locations will see selected equipment removed, with only remaining elements maintained where safe to do so.
Council described the changes as part of a broader asset management and “rationalisation” process, prioritising investment in larger, higher-use play spaces due to limited funding.
The closures have prompted concern from local families, particularly due to the lack of prior consultation or notice. Residents noted that smaller neighbourhood playgrounds play an important role in providing accessible, walkable recreation spaces for young children and families.
