Child Pricked by Dirty Syringe in Preschool Playground Sandpit

Two children at a preschool in St. John’s, Canada, uncovered a dirty syringe while digging in the outdoor play area. Provincial officials said one child was accidentally pricked by the needle, prompting health follow-up and an investigation into the childcare facility’s safety procedures. The preschool owner disputed claims that a child was injured but confirmed the syringe was found buried in the playground area.

Government inspectors cited the preschool for failing to properly assess the children for injury and for not immediately reporting the incident to authorities as required under childcare regulations. The owner said additional safety measures have since been introduced, including more frequent outdoor inspections and playground checks before children enter the area.

The incident raised concerns around playground maintenance, environmental hazards, and public safety in outdoor childcare spaces. The province stated the facility would need to address compliance issues to meet regulatory expectations.
