9-Year-Old Beginner Swimmer Dies During Pool Summer Camp

A nine-year-old boy, King Overton, died after being found unresponsive in a swimming pool during a summer camp at SwimRVA in Virginia, USA. Staff removed the child from the pool and immediately began CPR before emergency responders arrived. He was transported to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The boy’s mother, Shakerra Winston, described him as a kind and joyful child and said he had been excited to attend camp. She explicitly told the camp staff during registration that her son was a beginner and did not know how to swim. She enrolled him in the program specifically to learn water safety and basic swimming skills.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, while SwimRVA said they are cooperating fully with police.

Henrico Police and Fire are now encouraging all residents, young and old, to understand the importance of water safety, promoting community education initiatives aimed at preventing future tragedies.
