Unsafe Lead Levels Found in Half of New Orleans Playgrounds

unsafe lead levels found in half of new orleans playgrounds

Soil testing across New Orleans parks with play structures found hazardous concentrations of lead in about half of the tested sites, posing ongoing exposure risks to children years after initial cleanup efforts.

News reporters, working with experts, collected hundreds of soil samples at 84 city parks in late 2025; roughly half exceeded the federal hazard level for lead in urban soil established in 2024. Lead contamination persisted at parks previously remediated, including Mickey Markey Playground, where earlier testing had linked soil lead to elevated blood lead levels in a local toddler.

Historical cleanup efforts in 2011 were limited in scope and failed to broadly reduce contamination across playground areas. Officials acknowledge a lack of routine lead testing since then and describe the recent findings as concerning, with the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission indicating intentions to work with city departments and experts on possible remediation.

Lead in soil poses health risks to young children, who absorb lead-laden dust more readily than adults, and there is no known safe exposure level. The city’s financial constraints may challenge comprehensive remediation planning and testing moving forward.
