The princess of Wales Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens, London, is set to undergo a significant £3 million upgrade focused on renewing key play infrastructure and enhancing accessibility.
The playground, a popular family destination that first opened in 2000 and features a Peter-Pan-inspired design, will close for approximately six months while ageing equipment is replaced and improved. The funding will support construction of a new central play structure, a multi-level wooden galleon built with accessible features including wheelchair-friendly access, designed to retain the original play theme while improving inclusivity and physical challenge for children of all abilities.
Additional planned improvements include redesigned play areas, such as updated water and sensory zones, and space for younger children. The investment aims to extend the life and appeal of one of the UK’s most visited playgrounds by addressing end-of-life equipment and incorporating modern standards for inclusive and engaging play environments. The renewal reflects a commitment to balancing imaginative play with safety and accessibility in a high-use urban playground setting.
