Residents Continue to Push for Playground Upgrade After Child Injured on Ageing Equipment

There have been calls for the replacement of a 28-year-old playground at the park formerly known as Cesar Chavez Park in Colorado, USA, as neighbours cite ageing equipment, repeated repairs and ongoing safety concerns. The renewed push follows a 2024 incident in which a young boy required four staples after a bolt broke from a tyre swing and struck him on the head. His mother said in an interview “what I care about is safety. I don’t want a lawsuit, I don’t want money, I just want a workable playground where I don’t have to worry about kids getting hurt.”

Residents say the playground has experienced repeated equipment failures over the years and believe piecemeal repairs are no longer sufficient, urging Denver Parks and Recreation to prioritise a full upgrade.

While the department has acknowledged the need for improvements, officials said major park redevelopment projects are planned years in advance, with design work expected to begin in 2027 and construction funding proposed for 2028. In the meantime, the local neighbourhood association is considering fundraising efforts to help accelerate the project, with residents advocating for a modern playground that provides safer, age-appropriate play opportunities for future generations.
