The father of a five-year-old boy who drowned after wandering from a playground near the Anacostia River is calling for safety improvements to help prevent similar tragedies. Karsen West, who was autistic and non-verbal, was found unresponsive after entering the river in April 2026. The incident occurred after he wandered away during a family outing near the playground, prompting renewed concerns about safety measures around public recreation areas located beside waterways.
The child’s father has launched a campaign advocating for additional protective infrastructure, including warning signs, barriers and fencing along sections of the river near the playground. He believes measures that slow or prevent access to the water could help reduce the risk of future incidents involving young children.
The tragedy has drawn attention to the proximity of playgrounds and recreation facilities to open water, particularly in locations frequented by families. The father has petitioned authorities to consider safety enhancements, stating his goal is to help prevent other families from experiencing a similar loss.
Community members and officials are being urged to review whether additional safeguards are needed near playgrounds and public recreation spaces located adjacent to rivers and waterways.
