Weddin Shire Council will investigate installing shade structures over the main playground equipment at Livvi’s Place in Grenfell after concerns were raised about the risk of burns from hot metal surfaces during summer. Councillor Wezley Makin said the playground’s stainless-steel slide becomes extremely hot on days exceeding 35°C, creating a potential safety hazard for children.
Councillors heard that a shade sail could cost approximately $185,000, with a potential grant through the NSW Government’s Active Regional Communities Package covering most of the cost if successful. Supporters argued shade would improve safety, increase year-round usability and protect council’s investment in the popular inclusive playground.
Mayor Paul Best noted the stainless-steel slide was selected to support children with cochlear implants, as plastic slides can generate static electricity. Council resolved to investigate shade options and funding opportunities and report back, with the aim of having shade installed before the 2026-27 summer season.
