Point Lonsdale grandfather Martin O’Halloran has criticised the Borough of Queenscliffe over the condition of ageing foreshore playground equipment, claiming rusted rails, protruding nails and deteriorating infrastructure pose safety concerns for children. O’Halloran said he first raised the issue with council in October 2023 and has continued to call for upgrades to the playgrounds.

The Borough of Queenscliffe said it undertakes weekly playground inspections and engages independent specialists to conduct annual safety audits. Despite those assurances, O’Halloran maintains the equipment remains in poor condition and has called for a redesign using modern, weather-resistant materials better suited to the coastal environment.

The dispute highlights the ongoing maintenance challenges faced by playgrounds in coastal locations, where exposure to salt air and weather conditions can accelerate deterioration and increase asset management requirements.
