The City Council of Seville and Lipasam, the city-owned cleaning company, have been ordered to compensate a 26-year-old skateboarder after he suffered a serious foot injury at a skatepark. The skater stepped on broken glass while using the facility in October 2023, resulting in a deep cut that required hospital treatment and led to 74 days away from work.
A court found that the presence of glass on the skatepark surface demonstrated inadequate cleaning and maintenance of the public sporting facility. The ruling concluded that the local authorities failed to ensure safe conditions for users and could not provide evidence of cleaning or maintenance activities undertaken near the time of the incident.
The court awarded compensation of approximately €4,900, with the payment covered under the municipality’s insurance arrangements. The decision highlights the importance of maintaining recreational facilities and may influence future claims involving injuries linked to inadequate upkeep of public sports infrastructure.
