Mornington Peninsula Shire will install smoke and vape-free signage across approximately 134 playgrounds to support healthier environments for children and families. The initiative aims to reinforce existing laws that prohibit smoking and vaping within 10 metres of outdoor playground equipment under Victoria’s Tobacco Act 1987.
The signage is designed to remind visitors of these restrictions and promote safer, cleaner play spaces. Council representatives stated that playgrounds should be environments where children can play freely, without exposure to second-hand smoke, with the signage supporting broader health and wellbeing objectives.
Health partners involved in the initiative emphasised the role of smoke-free environments in reducing harm, particularly for children, and supporting community wellbeing. The rollout builds on existing smoke-free policies already implemented across beaches and sporting reserves within the region.
