Sydney playground tied to 2024 Asbestos Scandal Closed Again over Timber “Bleeding” Black Substance

Sections of a children’s playground at Rozelle Parklands in Sydney have been closed again after concerns were raised about timber observed to be “bleeding” a black tar-like substance and emitting a strong chemical odour. The timber, sourced from former rail yards on the site, had been intended for reuse as part of the park’s design. However, earlier transport department guidance had warned that treated timber, including railway sleepers, should not be reused due to potential chemical contamination risks.

The playground sits within a park that was previously closed in 2024 due to asbestos-contaminated mulch, contributing to ongoing scrutiny around material selection and site safety.

Following community concerns, sections of the playground were fenced off and some timber elements removed for testing as a precaution. Authorities have stated that no contamination has been confirmed, but investigations are ongoing to determine whether hazardous substances are present.
