Canberra Hospital Playground Set to Reopen After Safety Surface Upgrade

A hospital playground in Canberra is expected to reopen soon following closure for safety and maintenance upgrades, after concerns were raised by families about ongoing access restrictions. The playground, located at the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children, had been closed to allow for significant repair works.

Upgrades included replacement of the soft-fall surface, which had reached the end of its safe lifespan and was affected by damage from tree roots. Drainage issues above the playground area were also addressed as part of the works, highlighting the importance of maintaining safe surfacing and site conditions in play environments.

The playground, originally opened in 2013, remains a key facility for families and children attending the hospital, providing an important outdoor space during extended visits. Community feedback had highlighted the impact of repeated closures, particularly where children rely on the space for relief and activity during hospital stays.

Authorities confirmed the resurfacing works are considered a necessary upgrade, with soft-fall surfaces typically having a limited-service life before replacement is required. The site has now been handed back following completion of works, with reopening expected shortly.
