An ecological Ulsan playground established in 2016 is set to be demolished and replaced with a 128-space parking lot. The playground was originally developed to give children opportunities to play while learning about the ecological environment, with 500 million won invested in experiential facilities such as log hills, large spider web structures, and nest-style play areas.
Officials said construction is scheduled to begin in December, with completion targeted for December next year. The district has argued that the site’s declining use and ongoing parking shortages make the conversion necessary.
The case reflects a broader trend in South Korea, where neighbourhood playgrounds are gradually disappearing as low birth rates reduce the number of children using them. Playgrounds have traditionally been located in residential areas with good access and sunlight so children can visit easily and safely, but some of these spaces are now being repurposed as their use declines.
