A community-led project has been launched to rebuild a basketball court at Cummeragunja, aiming to restore a safe and functional recreational space for local residents. The initiative, known as the “Dream Big” project, focuses on upgrading an existing court that has fallen into disrepair, limiting its usability and safety.
The redevelopment will involve resurfacing the court and improving overall infrastructure to support regular use. The project is intended to provide a reliable and accessible space for physical activity, particularly for young people in the community.
Led by local Aboriginal leaders and supported by partners, the initiative emphasises the importance of culturally significant spaces and community-driven design. The upgraded court is expected to strengthen social connections, encourage active lifestyles, and create a positive environment for youth engagement.
The project also highlights broader issues around maintaining recreational facilities in regional and Indigenous communities, where limited funding and infrastructure challenges can impact access to safe sporting spaces. By restoring the court, the initiative aims to address these gaps and ensure long-term usability.
