Parents Criticise Design Options for ‘Toddler’ Playground Upgrade in Albany

Local parents have criticised a series of proposed design options for the planned upgrade of the Middleton Beach toddler playground, describing the concepts as underwhelming and not suited to the needs of very young children. The City of Albany shared five design options on social media and invited the community to vote for their preferred three concepts as part of the redevelopment consultation process.

While many residents agreed the existing playground requires renewal, some parents said the proposed designs lacked creativity and did not appear to reflect the needs identified in a recent community survey. Feedback from 221 respondents highlighted interest in slides, toddler-safe swings, climbing equipment, nature play elements, and sand and water play areas. Additional requests included shade, seating for carers, native gardens and fencing. Some parents questioned whether the survey results had been properly incorporated into the designs. Concerns were also raised that certain equipment shown in the concepts may be too challenging for toddlers who are still developing balance, climbing ability and coordination. Features such as higher climbing structures and fireman’s poles were cited as potentially unsuitable for children aged one to three and potentially limiting accessibility for children with varying abilities. Parents said a redevelopment presents an opportunity to create a more developmentally appropriate and inclusive environment.

As part of the project, the playground will be relocated slightly south and upgraded with new rubber soft-fall surfacing. A concrete wall will be constructed on the car park side, and additional seating, trees and landscaping are planned. Construction is expected to begin in July 2026, with landscaping scheduled for later in the year.
