A survey discussed by Nature Play WA suggests teenage girls are significantly underrepresented in public parks, playgrounds and recreational spaces. The research found that girls make up only about six percent of users in these environments, raising concerns that many public play areas are unintentionally designed in ways that do not appeal to or support their participation.
Nature Play WA chief executive Kelsie Prabawa-Sear said the findings highlight how design choices can influence who feels comfortable using these spaces. She said relatively small changes to park and playground design could help make them more welcoming to a wider range of users, including teenage girls.
Advocates say involving girls in the planning and design of recreational areas may help create spaces that better support their interests and encourage greater use of public parks and play environments.
