‘disgusting’ vandalism leaves geelong playground with melted plastic and exposed wires.

A playground at Haines Reserve in Victoria was closed after vandals caused extensive damage to equipment, creating safety hazards for children and families. Parents visiting the park reported that a large round swing had been cut down and ropes contained exposed sharp wires, while sections of plastic play equipment had been melted, leaving holes throughout the structure. Graffiti was also found across the playground.

Families who regularly visit the park raised concerns about the risk of injury, including sharp metal fragments on a tyre swing positioned at eye height. The damage was reported to the City of Greater Geelong, and the playground was closed while officers attended the site to secure the area.

Council officials confirmed the damage is significant and repairs and replacement parts will be required before the playground can reopen. The incident will be reported to Victoria Police. The council also noted an increase in vandalism affecting playgrounds over the past 12 months, with repairs to vandalised equipment costing more than $200,000 each year. The playground will remain closed until repairs are completed and the site is considered safe for the community.
