MP starts petition for new playground as residents are forced to travel miles just to access equipment

petition started for new playground as residents travel several miles just to access equipment

A campaign has been launched calling for the construction of a new playground in a community within Leeds after concerns were raised about the lack of local play facilities for families.

Labour MP Katie White has started a petition, describing it as unreasonable that a community of this size does not have its own playground. Residents report having to travel several miles to access play equipment in nearby areas, creating barriers to regular use, particularly during weekdays due to traffic and travel time.

One local parent said the absence of nearby facilities limits opportunities for after-school play and contributes to increased screen time for children, affecting social interaction and aspects of childhood development. White has stated that several potential sites have already been identified and that funding is available, with plans to work alongside the community to determine the most suitable location.

Leeds City Council said it is open to exploring ways to deliver high-quality, accessible, sustainable and inclusive play opportunities and reiterated its commitment to improving outcomes for children and young people across the city through existing programmes and investments.
