Play equipment destroyed in a suspected arson attack at a seaside park will be rebuilt as quickly as possible, local councillors have pledged – though one well-loved attraction will need to be demolished.
The fire broke out just after midnight late last month, causing significant damage to a pirate ship structure in the park’s playground. Fire crews remained on site for several hours to fully extinguish the blaze and secure the area. Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Following the incident, ward councillors met with police and senior council officers to discuss the next steps. They confirmed that restoring the playground is a top priority, with plans not only to rebuild but to improve the space for the future.
A series of meetings will take place over the coming weeks involving councillors, council officers and other key stakeholders to determine timelines and design decisions. Community members will play a central role in shaping the new playground, ensuring it reflects local needs and priorities.
There is also a strong commitment to include improved lighting as part of the redevelopment, aimed at enhancing safety and visibility.
