Burn danger on school equipment awareness when its hot and disability awareness
A 10-year-old special-needs student was left with second-degree burns after playing on a slide at Park Lakes Elementary School in Harris County, Texas. The incident occurred during recess, and the child reportedly went down the slide several times before the injuries were noticed.
School officials at Humble ISD confirmed the case and have begun an internal investigation, reviewing video footage and speaking with staff. No other students were injured, but the event has raised fresh concerns about how hot playground equipment can become during high-temperature days.
The child’s mother explained that because of her daughter’s spina bifida, she has reduced sensitivity in her legs and could not immediately feel the severity of the burns. She urged parents and schools to be vigilant, noting that if the air temperature is 95°F, playground surfaces can be considerably hotter — posing risks not only to children with special needs but to all young users.
