A 10-year-old Grade 5 learner died after a soccer goal post reportedly collapsed during break time at his primary school in South Africa.
The incident occurred on 16 February 2026 while a group of children were playing around the soccer posts on the school grounds. One of the goal posts allegedly fell and struck the boy, causing severe injuries. Emergency services were called to the school and arrived within about 20 minutes, but despite attempts to resuscitate the child, he was declared dead at the scene.
The South African Police Service has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the Gauteng Department of Education confirmed it will conduct its own enquiry. Counselling and psychosocial support services have been deployed to assist learners, staff and the victim’s family following the tragedy.
