This safety guide covers interpretation of the Australian Standards AS 4685 series relevant to playground shade sails, which specifies safety requirements for playground shade sails intended for permanent installation to provide sun and uv protection to playground users. This document is not applicable to waterproof shade sails (e.g., carparks), or intended uses outside of playgrounds. This document does not replace the Standards. If you’re responsible for playground design, procurement, installation, inspection, or ongoing maintenance, this guide helps you apply the intent of the AS 4685 series to shade sail safety decisions with more confidence. It’s designed to support practical, real-world conversations between councils, schools, early learning services, facility managers, playground manufacturers, shade sail suppliers, installers, and inspectors.
